Social Justice Resolution SBC

Against the Anti-Gospel of the Social Justice Movement

Submitted by messenger Grady Arnold

Whereas the social justice movement and worldview are being promoted worldwide, and

Whereas social justice by definition is based on anti-biblical and destructive concepts of Marxist ideology, and

Whereas social justice activism should be considered evil in that it is a vehicle to promote abortion, homosexuality, gender confusion, and a host of other ideas that are at antithetical to the gospel, the Christian worldview, and of God’s call to holiness (1 Peter 1:16), and

Whereas social justice is now being promoted and enforced by governments worldwide, with Canada being one example that as of 2011 developed Social Justice Tribunals, and is seeking to enforce Bill C-16, a bill passed in 2017 that in application sees it as a hate crime to use the wrong gender pronoun to describe an individual, and

Whereas social justice is deceptive, in that well-meaning Christians become unwittingly drawn into to such ideology and activism under the false assumption that social justice equates to standing up for people’s rights and compassion, and

Whereas Christians should be rejecting social justice, but still Christians are attempting to blend social justice with Christianity, however they must realize that to accept social justice ideology is to invite liberal theology and liberation theology into our churches, schools, and institutions, and

Whereas social justice is being used to attack Christianity at George Washington University and other campuses in 2018 where they are holding classes and seminars seeking to combat “Christian Privilege,” and attacking Christianity for it’s prominence in society using the social justice ethic, wherein the seminar at GWU students are taught “American Christians receive things they don’t deserve and are not worthy of getting,” and

Whereas Southern Baptists ought to be further warned by the example of the Methodist and Episcopal denominations that have already embraced the social justice movement, and instead of growing in number, these same denominations continue to lose membership at an alarmingly fast rate, and

Whereas the social justice agenda in the Southern Baptist Convention has become pervasive in some seminaries and state conventions, and

Whereas we are repeatedly warned in Scripture concerning such error and concerning being deceived, with Ephesians 5:6, Hebrews 13:9 and Colossians 2:8, and 1 Timothy 4:1 being just a few of these warnings, and

Whereas social justice and Christian ethics are clearly antithetical to each other in areas of tolerance, sexuality, gender, human life beginning at conception, and in general the role of a believer and the purpose for doing good works being to give glory to God, and

Whereas another place that social justice differs from the New Testament, is that social justice expresses compassion for certain groups they deem as “victims” while hating those with whom they disagree, rather than following the command of Christ to love everyone, and especially our enemies (Matt 5:44), and

Whereas social justice warriors routinely shut down speech that they disagree with, often with violence as part of their “social justice”, instead of “seeking to live at peace with all men” (Romans 12:18) and

Whereas social justice destroys people’s lives by having them to think of themselves as victims and take note of the most minor offenses and magnify them, and to note every disagreement or slight as a “micro aggression” and to complain rather than to obey scripture and to “count it all joy,” (James 1:2) and

Whereas true Christian theology builds people up to be resilient in the face of trials, but social justice seeks to stoke discontentment (1 Corinthians 10:10; Hebrews 13:5), and

Whereas our own denomination must reject social justice in all it’s forms, and continually practice the Reformation concept of “Sola Scriptura,” and avoid all types of worldly additions to “Scripture Only,” since the Word of God is totally sufficient to address all issues of ethics and compassion, then be it

RESOLVED, That the messengers to the Southern Baptist Convention, meeting in Dallas, Texas, June 12-13, 2018, decry and reject the terms and framework of social justice as insufficient to adequately reflect the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the Christian worldview; and be it further

RESOLVED That the entries of the Southern Baptist Convention be encouraged to avoid the terms “social justice” and social justice warrior” when referring to Christian ethics or activism and that the Holy Scriptures be used as a guide without mimicking the verbiage of the antichristian social justice movement, and be it

RESOLVED That all SBC Colleges and Universities be encouraged to review their teaching programs with special attention given to Humanities Departments to ensure that Marxist based social justice is not being taught in our colleges, universities, and seminaries, and be it

RESOLVED, That we encourage churches in preaching, teaching, and in discipleship to address the issues of racial reconciliation, poverty, the environment, sexual and gender issues, immigration, and education from a Christian worldview and reject the ideological underpinnings and verbiage of the social justice movement.

This resolution is a must. Social justice is of the world. IT MUST BE REBUKED AS SUCH. It is so important to recognize the duty to uphold the concept of Sola Scriptura . The Gospel is losing traction in American society partly because of a sleepy, lethargic church as a whole. Another reason, it is being stifled as nothing more than a collection of non-congruent books. Finally, as the power of inerrant, infallible Word of God is deemed as myth, the youth of our nation are finding nothing but hopelessness as hope in God's very own Word is being undermined in schools and media as the generation that preceded them have little to stand on when it comes to the authority of the Bible. With the breakdown of the family is at its worst, the the last thing the Enemy needs is God's Word empowering men and women with a balanced way of life as salvation from sin permeates society once again only to bring families back together again. Social Justice is a tool of anti-Christ groups. The church must decide if it is of the Lord or of the Devil. We as Southern Baptists must stand as the Lord calls us to.

Of course,we as individual Christians are to help the poor with food and the gospel and to gently show transgender and homosexual where they are wrong not haughtily but considering that we to commit sinand need Jesus" help

Can any of you who support this wicked resolution provide one Scriptural passage, properly interpreted in context that supports it. Should we teach holiness, yes but do not leave justice undone. Should we do it in love and maintain unity? Of course. But the passages embedded in the resolution do not support the position. The do no represent rightly handling or dividing the Word. There are multiple verses in OT and NT that demonstrate how wrong this resolution and the lack of Biblical love behind it really is. E.g, MIcah 6:6-8; Jeremiah 22:3; Exodus 22:21-24; Luke 10:30ff; Galatians 2:10; James 1:26-27 just to give you a few. If you desire to eliminate teaching on social justice then you are taking away from the Word of God and you shall be found to be a liar. Deuteronomy 4:2, 12:32; Proverbs 30:6; Revelation 22:18

The rest of the world is watching the SBC. It's amazing that, considering all of the latest failures in SBC leadership, you now want to say that societal issues and the marginalized don't matter?? Or they only matter if they have an "SBC" stamp on them? Jesus was about being with and uplifting the poor, the oppressed, women, etc. And as Christians, we follow His example and yes, we do so in HIS name. I will continue to do so, but it will be at Jesus' direction, NOT the SBC!

Social justice was the reason God commanded Moses to tell pharaoh to free the Israelites from Egyptian captivity. Social justice was the reason this country was founded...to free the colonists from the oppressive rule of the unjust rule of the British monarchy of the time. Social justice was the very reason Jesus died on the cross...so that ALL may enter into the kingdom of God.

JEsus was the original fighter for social justice. Look at the example of his life. He fought for the poor, the outcast, the minorities. This resolution doesn't understand what the social justice movement is and definitely is not Christ like. It comes from fear.

In what world is it Christian to say to minorities, women, the poor, and other denigrated populations that their concerns don't matter? Maybe you all should take the time to fully understand the core of the social justice movement before you call it "evil." Wasn't Jesus the original social justice advocate?

I agree 100%

100% support -- but please have a grammarian correct "it's", which is NOT possessive; put a hyphen in "Marxist-based," correct non-parallel structures, etc.

And, as Christians, we must NOT forget voluntary charitable deeds, support, and contribution.

I too support this resolution completely! This will be the first step in the total collapse of the SBC. This ideology is extremely dangerous and goes against every word of our LORD. I agree with others that this MUST be STOPPED!

I agree with this Resolution. The social justice movement needs to be refuted and rejected, especially in the SBC.

I wholeheartedly support this resolution. And especially the examination of what is being taught in our universities.

The truth will make you free.

The Social Justice issue is the very reason I left the Methodist church. This ideology is dangerous, does not honor God or our Lord Jesus Christ, and is an example of modern synchretism within the SBC. God’s Word is not to be changed to meet the demands of the left or any group. God is holy, will not share His glory with anyone or any ideology other than His Word, and all Christians are to be ambassadors for Jesus according to the whole counsel of God, and not for our own agendas.
Kim Fletcher, M.Div. on 05-15-2018 at 7:54 AM
I whole heartily support this resolution and pray that the SBC will do the same! The Social Justice Movement is anti-biblical and must be stopped!!!
